May 2013 - (WBAL, Baltimore) 4 horrific cases of animal cruelty reported in Baltimore, within 1 week.
The first case - Someone witnessed a 1-year-old dog being thrown from a car at Clifton Park. The dog that was since named Nemo was brought to BARCS with infected bite wounds and a deep neck laceration.
The second case - Queenie, was taken from a basement after nearly being starved to death. Shelter officials said her organs had begun shutting down from the starvation, and she had gaping open sores on her body that were due to being confined to a small space.
The third case - A 3-month-old puppy, which was later named Munchkin, was found dead by Animal Control officers after getting a report of an injured puppy lying in the rain in the middle of the 3800 block of Pall Mall Road in the Park Heights neighborhood. BARCS said the puppy had seven fatal knife lacerations and had been disemboweled. "He had stab wounds from his abdomen all the way up to his mouth," Morabito said. "It's so upsetting because he was a 3-month-old puppy, 15 pounds, absolutely helpless, and I can't fathom why someone would do something like that to him." (No picture available)
The fourth case - Officials said they found a dog that appears to be a pit bull mix in an abandoned building with chemical burns all over his body, but mainly cover his head and face.

January 2011 - (WJZ, Baltimore) "A cat was intentionally set on fire, doused with lighter fluid, thrown in a milk crate and then a match was thrown on her,” said Mary Helfrich of Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter. There are massive third- and fourth-degree burns on her back and side and severe trauma to her ears, but despite it all, vets expect Mittens will recover. “She’s a little worse for the wear. Her ears will probably fall off, and she will heal. If you note, she is growing some hair back, but her medication is taking care of her. It’s long term,” Helfrich said. From the report it looks as though she ran out of the milk crate, down the alley, extinguished herself, and then she came back to find her kittens,” Helfrich said. Yes, Mittens is a mama. Her three kittens were born before her serious burns. And despite her injuries, vets say she’s still taking excellent care of her family.
